About The Author
In Dan Denley’s own words; “ I formed my first Rock Band
when I was in the eighth grade. By the time I was a senior in high
school, I had played in about 10 different bands at just about every
major venue in Memphis including the New Daisy Theater. (Yes, the same
place Cold Play, Muse, Smashing Pumpkins, Megadeath, Breaking Benjamin,
and The Dave Mathews Band play when they come to Memphis.)
And I studied music in college… I graduated top of my class with a 3.7
GPA from the Scheidt School of Music (University of Memphis) with a
bachelors degree in Music. I’ve got a minor in classical piano and vocal
performance. And I attended the Eastman School of Music for a year in
Rochester, NY on a merit-based scholarship…”
Who Will Benefit From This
Guitar Instruction Course? Beginners: Dan Denley, despite the fact that he is an
experienced, highly educated professional, has the ability to remember
what it was like to be a rank beginner with little or no understanding
of how to hold a guitar or of how music theory operates in soloing,
improvising or writing songs. He cleverly demonstrates certain lesson
concepts by using parts of famous songs to inspire students to push
through the initial frustration and awkwardness of learning to play the
guitar.
Intermediate Players, by definition, often have inconsistent
skills and an incomplete understanding of the building blocks of music.
These inadequacies can be a major reason for being stuck in a rut with
no apparent way to dig out. The thoroughness of this course can be a
significant benefit to those that have some significant experience but
desire to become a more complete player.
Advanced Players, assuming that they have conquered and
frequently performed most of the concepts and techniques in this book,
will benefit the least. However, since even the most advanced player
doesn’t use all of the tricks in their bag all of the time they still
can become rusty.
Amazing
Guitar Secrets can be a good resource for refreshing some of these
skills and maybe learning a few new tricks.
Revisiting old guitar skills can even serve as a method for breaking
through writers block.
Acoustic Vs. Electric: Even though the vast majority of the
lessons are demonstrated with an electric guitar the skills and theory
are the same for both types of guitars and there is really no problem
using an acoustic guitar.

The Negatives
While the videos are generally well produced with good lighting, the
sound mix between the guitar and the instructors voice is often out of
balance. The instructor’s voice could usually be heard clearly but often
the guitar volume was too low. I was able to overcome this problem by
turning up the volume or using a good grade of headphones.
The videos could benefit from more close up shots of the right and left
hands. Watching the DVD lessons on a TV with a screen size that is
bigger than your computer monitor will bring out more of these details
even on wide shots where the author, full guitar and both hands are
visible.
The author occasionally uses a term without first defining it which
could be confusing for some beginners. However, many times, he would
realize this and quickly provide an explanation of the term.
Recommendation
Seriously consider paying the extra $50 ($97 total as of this writing),
for the physical course with the pre-printed and bound lesson supplement
books. This will free you to practice when you do not have access to a
computer or TV. Even while viewing the DVDs by computer or TV I still
preferred the printed pages to follow along with the video lessons. This
method of practicing is not really possible if only the Website Version
is purchased.
The Bottom Line
The
Amazing Guitar Secrets lessons program uses video, audio and the
written word to deliver an organized, thorough, adventure in learning to
play the guitar. This course makes a great effort to teach the student
to transcend basic guitar skills and music theory so that the real fun
of learning to solo, improvise and to write songs can come to life.
Considering that this program contains well over a year’s worth of
lessons that might easily cost a $1000 from a live teacher, the $47 to
$97 one time price is truly a great value.
This Guitar Lesson Course is definitely one of the best I have
encountered so far.
