Review: Learn and Master Guitar by Steve Krenz

Learn and Master Guitar Beat Out 14 Other Popular Guitar Lessons Programs To Earn Our Highest Rating: 10 out 0f 10...

The Author's Claim: "Learn & Master Guitar is serious guitarLearn and Master Guitarr training. It is by far the world's most complete video instruction course for the guitar... it is the only instructional package you'll ever need for total mastery of the guitar. All you provide is the practice! "

About The Author: Steve Krenz , according to the Learn & Master Guitar web site, has a degree in music and has played professionally with a broad range of bands from symphony orchestras to the well known “Fifth Dimension”.

Steve is currently an active guitarist playing and recording in Nashville, Tennessee. Besides having taught thousands of lessons to students of all ages and skill levels he has held guitar playing and music workshops all over the world.

I found Steve to be soft spoken and down to earth with out being boring. His matter-of-fact style of teaching made me feel like I could really succeed. His teaching was logical and thorough while moving along at a good pace. He cleverly offers short, fun and impressively inspiring performances as transitions between many lessons.

Guitar Types: Learn & Master Guitar teaches both Electric and Acoustic guitars are used in the course demonstrations. It is important to note that learning either guitar type requires learning the same fundamental skills.

The Packages:  Your Choices Include a 10 or 20 set of well produced DVDs that include 20 learning sessions, a 108 page companion book that follows the contents of each DVD and five Jam Along audio CDs that contain a full band playing all of the songs offered in the lessons. You can play along with the Guitar part or turn down the guitar by reducing the left stereo channel. The Jam along CDs were definitely the most fun of the entire course… a nice payoff to all the hard work.

The Lessons: Each Lesson is divided into three main parts; a play along video lesson demonstrated by Steve Krenz followed a video tips section that offers helpful information on useful auxiliary equipment, guitar maintenance and protection as well as how to pick out a guitar.

The final section of each lesson is called the Workshop. This is a play along guided practice session. I found the Workshops to be an ingenious way to learn how to practice. The built in structure prevents wasting time. It’s almost like having your teacher helping you at every practice session without the additional cost.

Beginners:  Learn & Master Guitar is nearly perfect. It begins with the assumption that the student knows almost nothing about the guitar. First the parts of the guitar are named followed by a quick but smooth transition to the first two guitar strings and two chords. Simple songs are soon introduced to break up the tedious work of playing notes and chords smoothly.

I found that I actually progressed much faster with the video lessons than when I had a conventional live teacher. The play along Workshop practice sessions are nicely designed to teach efficient and effective practice habits.

Intermediate Players: As an intermediate player I found new material in about the 5th CD. I found that although I knew most of the beginner lessons I was glad they were there as a refresher.

Minor Negatives: …and I do mean minor. The companion book doesn’t lay flat. A wire binding would solve this problem.

The Bottom Line:

Learn & Master Guitar is the best beginner guitar courses I have ever seen. It has been designed to suit many different learning styles. It involves no set up. Just grab your guitar, pop in the first DVD and everything is on autopilot. It's simple, fun and jammed with tons of lessons, songs, tips..... but, best of all it really works. Without hesitation I highly recommend Learn & Master Guitar.

Review: Amazing Guitar Secrets by Dan Denley

The Amazing Guitar Secrets Claim:  It Is Guaranteed to Sky-Rocket Your Playing To A New Level In Less Than 30 Days, Or Your Money Back...

About The Author:  In Dan Denley’s own words; “ I formed my first Rock Band when I was in the eighth grade. By the time I was a senior in high school, I had played in about 10 different bands at just about every major venue in Memphis including the New Daisy Theater. (Yes, the same place Cold Play, Muse, Smashing Pumpkins, Megadeath, Breaking Benjamin, and The Dave Mathews Band play when they come to Memphis.)

And I studied music in college… I graduated top of my class with a 3.7 GPA from the Scheidt School of Music (University of Memphis) with a bachelors degree in Music. I’ve got a minor in classical piano and vocal performance. And I attended the Eastman School of Music for a year in Rochester, NY on a merit-based scholarship…”

Who Will Benefit From Amazing Guitar Secrets?

Beginners: Dan Denley, despite the fact that he is an experienced, highly educated professional, has the ability to remember what it was like to be a rank beginner with little or no understanding of how to hold a guitar or of how music theory operates in soloing, improvising or writing songs. He cleverly demonstrates certain lesson concepts by using parts of famous songs to inspire students to push through the initial frustration and awkwardness of learning to play the guitar.

Intermediate Players, by definition, often have inconsistent skills and an incomplete understanding of the building blocks of music. These inadequacies can be a major reason for being stuck in a rut with no apparent way to dig out. The thoroughness of this course can be a significant benefit to those that have some significant experience but desire to become a more complete player.

Advanced Players, assuming that they have conquered and frequently performed most of the concepts and techniques in this book, will benefit the least. However, since even the most advanced player doesn’t use all of the tricks in their bag all of the time they still can become rusty. Amazing Guitar Secrets can be a good resource for refreshing some of these skills and maybe learning a few new tricks.

Revisiting old guitar skills can even serve as a method for breaking through writers block.

Acoustic Vs. Electric: Even though the vast majority of the lessons are demonstrated with an electric guitar the skills and theory are the same for both types of guitars and there is really no problem using an acoustic guitar.

The Amazing Guitar Secrets Course Contents

Amazing Guitar Secrets is available for another $50 that contains the entire course in physical form: 2 DVDs, 1 CD and the collection of 10 course books assembled into one convenient coil bound book. ($97)

What Guitar Types Are Taught?

Both. Even though the vast majority of the lessons are demonstrated with an electric guitar the skills and theory are the same for both types of guitars and there is really no problem using an acoustic guitar.

The Negatives

While the Amazing Guitar Secrets videos are generally well produced with good lighting, the sound mix between the guitar and the instructors voice is often out of balance. The instructor’s voice could usually be heard clearly but often the guitar volume was too low. I was able to overcome this problem by turning up the volume or using a good grade of headphones.

The videos could benefit from more close up shots of the right and left hands. Watching the DVD lessons on a TV with a screen size that is bigger than your computer monitor will bring out more of these details even on wide shots where the author, full guitar and both hands are visible.

The author occasionally uses a term without first defining it which could be confusing for some beginners. However, many times, he would realize this and quickly provide an explanation of the term.

Recommendation

Seriously consider paying the extra $50 ($97 total as of this writing), for the physical course with the pre-printed and bound lesson supplement books. This will free you to practice when you do not have access to a computer or TV. Even while viewing the DVDs by computer or TV I still preferred the printed pages to follow along with the video lessons. This method of practicing is not really possible if only the Website Version is purchased.

The Bottom Line

The Amazing Guitar Secrets lessons program uses video, audio and the written word to deliver an organized, thorough, adventure in learning to play the guitar. This course makes a great effort to teach the student to transcend basic guitar skills and music theory so that the real fun of learning to solo, improvise and to write songs can come to life.

Considering that this program contains well over a year’s worth of lessons that might easily cost a $1000 from a live teacher, the $47 to $97 one time price is truly a great value.

This Guitar Lesson Course is definitely one of the best I have encountered so far.

Review: Jamorama Guitar Lessons by Ben Edwards

Jamorama Is The Absolute Best Of The Inexpensive Guitar Lesson Programs...

Jamorama GuitarThe Goal Of Jamorama: “… to learn to play guitar and play virtually any guitar song you hear. Whether you want to start a band, perform at clubs, write your own original songs, or just become a great guitarist. No matter what level you are at now (beginner, intermediate or advanced)…” Ben Edwards Author of Jamorama

Who Will Benefit Most From This Program? Beginner through Intermediate Students, that are at least 8 years old and have access to a computer.

Guitar Types: Since this is a beginner - intermediate course, the same lessons are required for both electric and acoustic guitars. The illustrations often contain information about both.

About The Author: In Ben Edwards own words; “I am a highly respected guitar teacher. I’m the former lead guitarist for “DegreesK”, who I toured with internationally. Before joining the band I gained a Bachelor of Education. My passion for teaching others, especially guitar, sparked me to develop Jamorama The Ultimate Learning Kit…”.

The Parts of Jamorama

  • 4 Downloadable ebooks,

  • 148 short videos

  • Jamtracks are audio-only files for essential practicing with a backup band. This part was my favorite. Just plain fun!

The Jamorama Bonus Software

  • Guitar Tuner Pro

  • Guitar Ear It - is a software game designed to teach how to recognize the sound of a chord and match it to its name (Am, B, C#, etc.).

  • Metronome

  • Jayde Musica Pro is a software game that is cleverly designed to develop your ability to quickly identify the pitch of a note with its musical symbol and its letter name.

The Negatives: One very significant weakness is that this is basically a written program with short audio and video snippets instead of an all video program. They have, however, done a masterful job of enhancing each written lesson with well produced photos, diagrams, audio, video and play along jam tracks.

Price: $39.95

Guarantee: 60 days

The Bottom Line:

My top recommendations always lean towards guitar instruction programs that are all-video. They generally offer a clearer method of communicating lots of subtle information. Having said that, I feel that Jamorama is the absolute Best partial audio and video enhanced, written lessons I have ever seen. At only $39.95 it is also the least expensive one.

The lessons are logical, thorough and perfect for the rank beginner all the way through advanced intermediate players. The course has some of the most innovative software programs and games for taking the mundane parts of learning the guitar and making them fun.

Jamorama is perfect for someone that does not wish to spend $150- $200 for an all-video program. It is an excellent, complete, professional, low-cost way to get started with learning to play guitar. For these reasons, I recommend the Jamorama guitar lesson program.

Review: Guitar Alliance by Kenny Mann

Who will benefit from Guitar Alliance?

I can honestly say that rank beginners through experienced intermediate students should be able have a good experience with this program. Beginners will benefit from the thorough, logical lay out of the lessons with audio assistance even without the advantages of video. Intermediate and advanced players will enjoy a polishing of old techniques as well as filling in the gaps of missing guitar theory. I truly believe everyone will benefit from the rich forums.

The Contents

Guitar Alliance is a private, members only, website is well organized with a simple and logical system of navigation. The first time you open the site you will land on a special “ Getting Started “ page that describes how the lessons are organized and how to navigate the website.

Riff-O-Matic Lite - This is a generous taste of the full Riff-O-Matic program where the emphasis is on putting your new skills to work learning some of the classic popular guitar songs. Here is a partial listing:

Best of You by Foo Fighters, Vertigo by U2, Witchy Woman by The Eagles, Moonflower by Santana, The Thrill is Gone by B. B. King and Imagine by Chet Atkins, ( just to name a few ).

This section was so much fun that I ended up spending much more time exploring the songs than necessary to write this part of the review.

Jam Tracks - This is another fun section that is designed for practicing solos and improvisation with well known, popular songs.

Testing - This quiz section emphasizes learning to hear and recognize the open strings sounds, chords and key signatures..

Forums: These contain a wealth of guitar questions and answers from the many members of Guitar Alliance. The topics range from guitar selection and maintenance to helpful techniques. They even have opinion forums that strive to answer fun questions like; what are your top 10 favorite guitarists and guitar solos. Part of the value of these forums comes from the large number of people that participate.

Other sections of the Guitar Alliance lessons program include a Chord Guide, Scales, Arpeggios, Strumming, Songwriting, Finger Style Playing and a Gear Guide.

Negatives

The biggest drawback to Guitar Alliance seems to be lack of video. Learning guitar is a visual, auditory and tactile experience. Teaching guitar by employing all of these senses is ideal.

This program is offered only by internet which, by definition, ties the student to a computer. A fairly fast computer with a fast DSL or Cable internet connection will be important.

Another minor problem is that the audio samples, while excellent in quality and quantity, are usually offered at full tempo which might be frustrating for some students. Optional audio examples of songs and lessons with slower tempos would be helpful for practicing. However, I discovered that I could listen at full speed then turned off the audio to practice. When I could play the lesson at close to full speed I would turn the audio back on and play along.

The Bottom Line

I wasn’t expecting much when I began to explore the Guitar Alliance Program especially when I discovered that it was an internet only experience with no video. I was pleasantly surprised. This website is logically laid out with thorough lessons in technique and music theory that are supplemented by a great many helpful audio tracks. This is a fun course because eventually the lessons teach how to play parts of popular guitar songs. Learning to improvise solos with the Jam Tracks, while quite a challenge, was also great fun. The informative and enjoyable forums alone were almost worth the cost of the course. The annual fee of only $39.95, ( as of this writing ), is an excellent value.
